Asset Tests

Federal law limits the assets of food stamp recipients in order to preserve limited resources for the truly needy. But more than 33 states and the District of Columbia have used loopholes to waive asset tests altogether. With no asset test in place, even millionaires can receive food stamps—leaving truly vulnerable citizens at risk. This reform, similar to language included in the 2018 House Farm Bill, save taxpayers could save more than $7 billion.
