Report Details New Health Care Opportunities with Association Health Plans

Naples, FL – A new report released by the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) highlights the impact association health plans can have on lowering health insurance premiums for small businesses and entrepreneurs, encouraging the hiring of more workers and subsequent economic success.

According to the report, up to four million Americans would have access to new, affordable options by allowing small businesses to band together to purchase insurance through AHPs. Annual premiums for AHPs are expected to be up to $10,800 lower than premiums on the individual market, resulting in savings for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and married business owners who will be able to take advantage of them. By expanding access to AHPs, states can to increase access to these benefits for small businesses and their workers.

Securing affordable health insurance is the single biggest problem small businesses face. As the cost of health insurance continues to rise, fewer and fewer small businesses can afford to offer coverage to their employees—forcing workers onto the individual market or leaving them uninsured. AHPs have the ability to empower small businesses to offer affordable coverage to their employees by putting them on the same playing field as large companies.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” said Nick Stehle, FGA senior research fellow and author of the report. “But barring them from securing affordable health insurance makes them less competitive and stifles their growth. States have an opportunity to break down barriers to allow small businesses to join AHPs, allowing them to provide affordable coverage to their employees.”
