FGA Responds to Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics Report

Naples, FL—Earlier this week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the number of job openings reached a record high of 8.1 million in March. This report comes only days after BLS announced an increase in the median duration of unemployment.

In a new poll from the Foundation for Government Accountability, 73 percent of small businesses report they are having a difficult time hiring. FGA issued the following response:

“Federal lawmakers are hurting small businesses looking to fill positions essential to their day-to-day operations. The $300 weekly unemployment bonus is trapping too many Americans in dependency by paying them more to stay home than return to work,” said Jonathan Ingram, Vice President of Policy and Research. “It’s time for states and Congress to stop paying people not to work, help jumpstart the economy, and move millions back on the path to the American Dream.”

Results for this poll are based on telephone interviews conducted among a nationwide sample of 503 small business owners between April 29-May 9, 2021. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.37 percentage points.
