Letter: Work requirements are just what Ohioans need

|

Currently, because our government continues to waive work requirements in some parts of Ohio, childless able-bodied adults without physical or mental disabilities in 38 counties are not required to work to receive food stamps. As a result, some able-bodied adults on food stamps do not work.

This hurts the truly needy who genuinely rely on the food stamp program, the taxpayers who are footing the bill and the capable adults who are missing out on the benefits of work.

That’s why we need to pass House Bill 200. HB 200 does not kick hardworking Ohioans off welfare, despite what critics have claimed. Some able-bodied adults will naturally transition off the program as their incomes increase, as has happened in Florida, where people went back to work in more than 1,000 industries, and in Arkansas, where incomes tripled just two years after those adults left welfare.
