Stopping Medicaid Expansion
Medicaid’s Path Is Unsustainable. Preserve resources for the truly needy, encourage work, and save taxpayer dollars.
Medicaid enrollment soared to an all-time high in 2023, surpassing 100 million enrollees nationwide.
This boom was largely driven by able-bodied adults flooding the program—not the truly needy Medicaid was intended to serve. Medicaid expansion and backwards pandemic policies were the main culprits.
Now is the time to for policymakers at the state and federal level to reverse course before Medicaid’s budget-busting path takes it over the edge completely.
The Path Forward on Medicaid
- The remaining non-expansion states should continue to reject expanding Medicaid to able-bodied adults under ObamaCare, while expansion states should roll back the program.
- Require able-bodied, childless adults on Medicaid to work, train, or volunteer at least part time.
- Require comprehensive data cross-checks to help ensure program eligibility and weed out abuse.
- Close the loopholes that allow self-attestation for Medicaid eligibility factors, such as income.
- Enact a Medicaid program integrity waiver package: Institute a fraud lockout, prohibit pre-populated reforms, prevent automatic renewals, and end Hospital Presumptive Eligibility (PHE).
- Do not allow the ObamaCare exchange to make a Medicaid eligibility determination. Instead, states should verify applications submitted from the exchanges.
