Rep. Ted Budd pushes back on ‘Bidenbucks’ with the “Promoting Free and Fair Elections Act”

Naples, FL – Today, Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced the Promoting Free and Fair Elections Act to help stop President Biden’s executive order on voting, EO 14019, from undermining elections across the country. The bill would prohibit federal agencies from entering into agreements with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) hand-selected by the White House to conduct voter registration activities or from using federal funds to carry out voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts targeting only likely Democrat voters.

The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds Rep. Budd for taking this next step in prohibiting the Biden administration from politicizing America’s elections.

In January, Rep. Budd led a coalition of 36 House members to send a letter to Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young requesting documents and an investigation into President Biden’s executive order empowering every federal agency to engage in election-related activities.

Also earlier this year, FGA filed suit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) after several federal executive agencies failed to respond to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for documents regarding EO14019 which federal law requires the government to share. On July 12, 2022, a court ruling in favor of FGA ordered DOJ to produce all documents it is required to produce under the law by October 13, with the first wave of documents arriving on September 1. In issuing this order, the Court was clearly unconvinced by DOJ’s claim that it needed until next year to provide the documents and sent a strong signal to DOJ that the Court is unlikely to tolerate attempts by the Biden administration to delay providing documents related to the EO any longer.

“No president of any party should be able to use the might of the federal government and taxpayer resources to influence the outcome of elections,” said Tarren Bragdon, FGA President and CEO. “Rep. Budd has led the charge demanding transparency and calling out the Biden administration for hiding its plans to undermine state control over election laws. The Promoting Free and Fair Elections Act is needed to course-correct the executive branch’s attempts to intervene in America’s elections.”
