FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ALASKA REPRESENTATIVE RECEIVES NATIONAL LEGISLATOR OF YEAR AWARD
AWARD HONORS LEADERSHIP IN PROTECTING ALSASKANS FROM ABUSES OF EXECUTIVE POWER

Alaska Rep. Charisse Millett was honored with the Foundation for Government Accountability’s 2015 Legislator of the Year Award Monday for her leadership in the state to stand up to abuses of executive power.

Millett rallied her fellow legislators to challenge Gov. Bill Walker when he abused his power by raiding a mental health trust fund to subvert the legislative process and the state’s separation of powers. Strong leaders like Millett send a message to politicians everywhere that they are not above the law, and if they step too far they will be stopped.

“It’s never easy to stand up to a governor, or to get other legislators on join you in that fight, but the whole concept of American liberty is founded on the separation of powers in our government,” said Tarren Bragdon, FGA CEO.

“Leaders like Rep. Millett are ensuring Alaskans have a say in the way their state is run by protecting the right of the people to have their representatives voices heard in the lawmaking process.”

Millett is one of a handful of state leaders being recognized from around the country for their work in 2015, and they are the first group of legislators to be honored with this annual award.
