President Trump Signs Executive Order to Lower Drug and Health Care Costs for Patients and their Families.
NAPLES, FL—The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds President Trump’s signing of an executive order yesterday to empower and put patients first with clear health care pricing information.
This executive order will:
- Empower: Ensure that patients and families have clear and transparent pricing information, so they are empowered to make health care decisions that work best for themselves and their families.
- Reduce Costs: When hospitals can hide their prices, they benefit at the patients’ expense. This executive order will help patients lower health care costs.
- Put American Patients First: President Trump is delivering his promise to put America First by holding the health care industrial complex accountable.
“Price transparency isn’t just common sense, it’s essential for protecting patients. Americans deserve to know the cost of their care upfront, without hidden fees or surprise bills,” said Tarren Bragdon, President and CEO of FGA. “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, families will no longer be exploited by a broken health care system. He has once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to putting Americans first, and we are grateful for his dedication to real health care accountability.”
Background:
This isn’t the first time the Trump administration has been at the forefront of empowering patients. In 2019, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services introduced a groundbreaking rule to enhance price transparency for medical services. This rule mandated hospitals to disclose the actual prices of non-emergency services in a machine-readable format, enabling patients to compare costs and make informed decisions directly from their smartphones. The rule took effect in early 2021 as Biden assumed office. However, his administration quickly issued guidance to hospitals and drug manufacturers, signaling they would not be required to comply—allowing hidden costs to continue burdening patients.
The Foundation for Government Accountability sued the Biden administration to require adherence and adoption of Trump-era transparency measures. The Biden administration continued to delay enforcement despite FGA winning both lawsuits—one on hospital transparency and another on prescription drug price transparency. Now, President Trump is delivering for the American people by reinstating and enforcing the transparency rules from his first term that the Biden administration failed to implement.
“FGA has fought tirelessly to hold the Biden administration accountable for failing patients in the health care system. We took Biden to court—and won—because Americans deserve transparency and accountability from their health care system,” Bragdon continued. “I’m grateful for President Trump’s dedication to transparency and empowering Americans.”
