FGA Applauds Trump Administration Executive Order on Health Care

The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds the Trump Administration’s commitment to reversing the devastating impact of ObamaCare with the signing of an Executive Order Promoting Healthcare Choice and Competition Across the United States. The executive order, signed today by President Trump, marks a huge step in rolling back harmful ObamaCare regulations that have been driving up health care premiums. This move will begin to increase affordability and flexibility for consumers.

The executive order begins to lift some of the insurance rules set by ObamaCare that have been strangling consumers and employers by expanding insurance options for individuals who purchase insurance on their own or work for a small business. It also includes instructions for agencies to explore ways to ease regulations and lower premiums, offering consumers and employers much-needed relief from the unsustainable cost of insurance under ObamaCare.

In addition, the executive order  directs agencies to begin  reinstating coverage known as short-term medical insurance, a low-cost option that was eliminated under ObamaCare. Individuals are now able to purchase these plans for up to one year. These short-term plans, in addition to the health reimbursement accounts that are expanded under the order, increase the available plans for those who are currently priced out of options.

“Consumers and employers are struggling to cope with the unsustainable cost of insurance under ObamaCare. In some cases, employers are having to choose between hiring employees or providing insurance coverage—and that’s a decision that should not have to be made. The addition of more short-term plan options in the market allows consumers to choose the plan that best works for themselves and their families,” said Tarren Bragdon, President and CEO of FGA. “This increased flexibility is a breath of fresh air after the failed one-size-fits-none health care model of ObamaCare, and I look forward to working with the Trump Administration as we continue to restore affordability, quality, and choice in health care for the American people.”
