FGA Applauds Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans for Bold Debt Ceiling Negotiations

The REINS Act and Work Requirements in food stamps and Medicaid are the centerpieces of the Republican Plan to Grow the Economy

NAPLES, FL – Today, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) introduced the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023, House Republicans’ plan to limit federal spending, save taxpayer dollars, and grow the economy as part of the debt ceiling negotiations. The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds the inclusion of the REINS Act and work requirements for food stamps and Medicaid as part of the negotiations.

A few key provisions of the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023:

  • Expands the food stamp general work requirements to childless adults aged 18-55
  • Expands the Medicaid general work requirement to childless adults aged 18-55
  • Reins in executive overreach
  • Reclaims unspent COVID funds
  • Defunds President Biden’s IRS army
  • Halts the student loan giveaway for the wealthy

“The Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023 is a bold and necessary step towards fiscal responsibility and economic growth. By limiting federal regulation, Congress can reduce inflation and increase government transparency,” said Tarren Bragdon, FGA’s President and CEO. “Additionally, work requirements will help get Americans out of dependency and back to work, preserving resources for the truly needy. There has never been a better time to get able-bodied adults back into the workforce.”

President Biden’s unilateral, massive expansion of the food stamp program has been fueling our nation’s workforce crisis. There are now a near-record-high 41.6 million Americans on food stamps, more than doubling from two decades ago—all while there are nearly 10 million open jobs across the country with not enough workers to fill them.

By reining in the regulatory state and promoting work, this plan will create a more prosperous America. FGA applauds House Republicans for their leadership and urges Congress to swiftly pass this important legislation.
