Naples, FL – The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster for directing the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to add work requirements for able-bodied adults on Medicaid.
The governor’s directive came on the heels of new guidance from the Trump administration outlining how states can implement work requirements in the Medicaid program. Under the guidance, states can seek federal waivers to require able-bodied adults on Medicaid to work, train, or volunteer as a condition of eligibility.
This commonsense reform to move able-bodied adults from welfare to work has led to increased incomes and reduced dependency when implemented in other welfare programs. The new work requirement will help strengthen South Carolina communities and individuals by promoting independence and saving resources for the truly needy.
“Work is the best path out of dependency,” said Tarren Bragdon, CEO and President of FGA. “Governor McMaster leads a state that is creating jobs and opportunity for South Carolinians, and we applaud him for his commitment to move thousands of able-bodied adults from welfare to work.”
