Naples, FL—The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) congratulates Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and the state Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) for taking bold action to reform their state’s food stamp program and help more Alaskans out of welfare dependency.
“This is a tried and true reform, and Alaskans should be proud to know that their food stamp program will help enrollees find a path back to self-sufficiency,” said Sam Adolphsen, policy director at FGA. “This waiver represents a huge economic opportunity for Alaskans and is their invitation to rejoin the workforce and leave dependency.”
Alaska joins Arkansas, Florida, and dozens of other states in reinstating food stamp work requirements in all or part of their respective states. FGA research shows program enrollment fell by 70 percent after work requirements went into effect, and after leaving welfare, Arkansans’ incomes nearly tripled within two years.
