Patients are forced to play price roulette when they seek health care. Every decision they make, no matter how small, can have a real impact on the cost of their care—even parking their car at one building instead of another can mean the difference in hundreds or thousands of dollars for the exact same services. With a pandemic still very present in our country, public health and our economy cannot afford to allow uncertainty in care costs to prevent people from seeking COVID-19 testing and treatment.
That is why Senators Braun, Grassley, Enzi, Ernst, Loeffler and Kennedy’s Health Care PRICE Transparency Act is so important, as it provides real prices to patients ahead of time. Similar state laws across the country should encourage wide bipartisan support for such an effort.
The Health Care PRICE Transparency Act empowers patients to access what the exact rates that will be paid for services ahead of time, allowing them to compare between care settings (including out-of-network options) and know cash rates. This data will also be made available to consumer-friendly price transparency tools that are already on the market, so patients and providers have the tools they need to make the best decision for care.
