Naples, FL — The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) presented Arkansas State Senate Majority Leader Scott Flippo—a longtime champion of welfare reform—with its ‘Friend of Government Accountability’ award.
“Arkansas is a national leader on welfare reform because of policymakers like Majority Leader Flippo,” said Nic Horton, research director at FGA. “He understands how policies affect people, and finds innovative ways to strengthen our safety net while helping Arkansans help themselves.”
Sen. Flippo has been a strong and steady advocate for protecting Medicaid and state welfare programs for the truly needy. He carried legislation last session that would require able-bodied adult food stamp recipients to participate in an employment and training (E&T) program to receive benefits. Arkansas was the only state to pass this reform that year.
“Sen. Flippo believes safety net programs should be a hand-up, not a handout,” Horton added. “His commitment to finding pathways to self-sufficiency will strengthen entire generations of Arkansas families.”
The ‘Friend of Government Accountability’ award recognizes the leadership of policymakers to sponsor and promote legislation that will reduce barriers to work and promote better lives of self-sufficiency and dignity for individuals and families.
