New Poll Finds Voters Want Welfare Reform

Naples, FL – In his State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Trump stated that “we want every American to know the dignity of a hard day’s work.” A new poll, released today by the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA), found that the vast majority of voters agree and support commonsense measures that will move people from welfare to work.

The poll found that 90 percent of all voters support requiring able-bodied adults to work, train, or volunteer at least part-time in order to receive welfare. When states implemented similar reforms, able-bodied adults leaving welfare found work in more than 600 different industries and their incomes more than doubled on average.

The Trump administration recently released new guidance allowing states to implement work requirements for able-bodied adults receiving Medicaid, bringing the program in line with other welfare programs, including food stamps and TANF.

The poll also concluded that:

  • 83 percent of voters support work requirements for food stamps
  • 75 percent of voters support work requirements for Medicaid
  • 81 percent of voters support work requirements for public housing

“The growing welfare state has crippled state and federal budgets and trapped millions of Americans in dependency. Commonsense reforms like work requirements will help break the cycle of dependency and preserve funds for the truly needy and other critical public services,” said Tarren Bragdon, CEO and President of FGA. “Voters are demanding that policymakers pursue welfare reforms that can move millions of able-bodied adults from welfare to work.”
