New Paper Finds Alarming Waitlist Numbers in Medicaid Expansion States

Naples, FL – A new paper, released today by the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA), reports that 38 states currently have Medicaid waiting lists, comprised of truly needy individuals waiting for Medicaid benefits.

The report, authored by FGA’s Research Director Nic Horton, noted that Medicaid has lost its focus. Now, there are two and a half times as many able-bodied adults in Medicaid as there are individuals with disabilities.

The research found that:

  • More than 650,000 individuals are languishing on Medicaid waiting lists nationwide
  • At least 21,904 individuals on Medicaid waiting lists have died in ObamaCare expansion states since expansion began
  • More than 28 million able-bodied adults are now enrolled in Medicaid

“Medicaid has lost its focus, and it’s time that Congress and state policymakers reprioritize and refocus the program to restore it to its original purpose—a safety net for the truly vulnerable,” said Horton. “Policymakers should enact work requirements for able-bodied adults, crack down on welfare fraud, and stop further Obamacare expansions to protect Medicaid for the truly needy,” stated Horton.
