Kentucky Takes the Next Step in Moving Adults from Welfare to Work

Naples, FL – The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin for signing key welfare reform measures that will re-prioritize the truly needy and promote work for able-bodied adults.

Governor Bevin has fought tirelessly for welfare reform in Kentucky, helping the state become the first in the nation to win federal approval for commonsense Medicaid work requirements and strengthening program integrity to eliminate welfare fraud and abuse. The most recent legislation builds on the state’s commitment to restore welfare to its original purpose as a temporary safety net for the truly needy and move able-bodied adults from welfare to work.

The legislation strengthens commonsense work requirements for able-bodied adults on food stamps and implements measures to fight welfare fraud by ensuring that those receiving benefits are actually eligible. The initiative could not be more timely, given recent audits that found more than 100,000 potentially ineligible individuals enrolled in Medicaid, costing taxpayers—and the truly needy—millions.

“Kentucky has been a national leader in state-driven welfare reform under the Bevin administration, and these reforms are simply the next step forward. Governor Bevin’s leadership, combined with the tireless efforts of Rep. Huff, Majority Floor Leader Shell, Rep. Moser, and Speaker Pro Tempore Osborne, has ensured that Kentucky remains a place where the safety net exists for the most vulnerable and work is the path to self-sufficiency,” said Tarren Bragdon, President and CEO of FGA.
