FGA Files Amicus Brief in Support of USDA’s Final Food Stamp Rule

Naples. FL — This week, the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) filed an amicus brief in support of the Department of Agriculture’s proposed food stamp rule, intended to close welfare loopholes and encourage movement from welfare to work.
“At a time when employers have more job openings than people to fill them, it is neither compassionate nor wise to allow ‘nearly 700,000’ Americans to remain on food stamps and unemployed,” the brief reads, in part. “The compassionate approach is the one taken by the final rule—ending waiver abuse, enforcing Congress’s work requirement (except in areas that truly lack sufficient jobs), and encouraging individuals to escape welfare dependency and discover the dignity and self-sufficiency of work.”
“The Department of Agriculture’s final rule ends decades of waiver abuse, restoring the food stamp program to its original intent: helping the truly needy through times of economic duress and encouraging swift movement back into the workforce,” said Chase Martin, legal affairs director at FGA. “At the national and state level, we are seeing unemployment levels at record lows. Able-bodied adults without dependents should be working and USDA is squarely within their legal right with this final rule. Frankly, the change couldn’t come at a better time.”
