Naples, FL – The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) commends the Trump administration for their commitment to lowering costs and increasing competition in the nation’s health insurance marketplace.
To allow more individuals to access lower-cost health plans, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and Secretary Alexander Acosta today issued a final rule to expand association health plans (AHPs), a mechanism allowing employers and sole proprietors to band together to purchase health insurance. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this reform will bring 400,000 previously uninsured individuals into AHPs.
The rule thoughtfully addresses the needs of working owners, maintains rules for existing AHPs to prevent disruption, and seeks to ensure national associations have a clear path forward to operate.
“We encourage the agency to continue to build on this final rule to maximize the opportunities for small employers to have more lower-cost health insurance options, including national AHP options across state lines, wherever they reside,” said Joel Allumbaugh, Visiting Fellow at FGA.
FGA submitted comments to the DOL in response to the Proposed Rule earlier this year.
