FGA Applauds Hutchinson administration for Commitment to Reducing Welfare Fraud

Naples, FL – The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson for its efforts to reduce welfare fraud, waste, and abuse and protect resources for the truly needy. The Hutchinson administration reported that 80,000 ineligible individuals were removed from the state’s Medicaid rolls in 2017.

According to the Hutchinson administration, nearly one-third of the cases involved people who did not report changes of address as required by the state, while more than 25,000 people were removed from the Medicaid rolls because they were receiving benefits from more than one state. The administration also reported that more than 16,000 people were removed because of unreported employment.

Across the nation, welfare fraud, waste, and abuse cost taxpayers billions of dollars and rob limited resources from the truly vulnerable.

“The Hutchinson administration has made important strides in reducing welfare fraud and abuse, and the state should be commended for its efforts to preserve funds for the truly needy,” said Nic Horton, Research Director of FGA. “We look forward to working with Arkansas to strengthen these efforts across the welfare system and sharing Arkansas’ success with other states.”
