North Carolina Poised To Reform Welfare Programs To Protect Truly Needy
After seven years, North Carolina is on track to reform their past costly welfare expansions that have led to the state attracting many new enrollees, but trapped many in poverty in the process. The legislative reform agenda includes a vital and common sense change to increase the frequency of eligibility checks in order to stop paying for individuals that no longer qualify for programs. The whole package of reforms are important as they protect limited resources for truly needy citizens.
A provision in the Senate’s budget proposal, spearheaded by Sen. Ralph Hise, would rein in frequently-exploited loopholes in the state’s food stamps and Medicaid systems, bringing overdue protection to valuable resources for families who need them most and protecting the system from abuse.
