Violet’s Story

| Nebraska

Occupational licenses are often costly and time-consuming. And at times, programs that help individuals secure a license don’t even teach needed skills. Instead of having the chance to earn a living, those wishing to practice their craft are left sitting on the sidelines. Meet Violet Banks. Violet began braiding hair when she was just twelve years old, but after college, she couldn’t afford the cosmetology schooling necessary to receive an occupational license so she could braid hair legally. Thanks to then-Nebraska State Senator Nicole Fox, legislation was passed that removed the cosmetology schooling requirement to braid hair, allowing Violet and others to earn a living. Listen to Violet and Nicole talk about how occupational licensing often hurts low-income workers, and how through commonsense licensing reform, more individuals can earn a living practicing the crafts they love.
